How the process works
From your buying brief to shipment from Japan
Five defined steps keep the approved route, vehicle specification, purchase evidence, and Japan-side status visible throughout the order.

Specify the vehicle type, new or used status, model, chassis code, year, specification, budget, volume, Chilean destination, and preferred delivery terms.
Receive a shortlist and purchase terms

Before approval, you receive the agreed service fee, inland transport cost, sailing estimate, and Incoterms.
Approve the bid or stock offer

Appoint a Chilean customs agent or specialist before purchase. Sumotori Auto supplies the agreed Japan-side evidence and export documents; the importer and its representatives confirm admissibility, obtain local approvals, clear the shipment, and register the vehicle.
Used vehicles are generally prohibited
Chile generally prohibits the importation of used motor vehicles and used motorcycles. Do not buy a used unit for circulation in the general customs territory unless the importer has written confirmation that a specific legal exception applies.
Vehicles qualifying as “sin uso”
The general route is limited to vehicles Chile accepts as “sin uso”; appearance or low mileage alone is not enough. The local importer confirms the exact status and arranges the applicable 3CV model homologation and individual CHI-e documentation.
Used vehicles for free-zone operations
Used vehicles may enter designated free zones under their specific customs regime. A free-zone purchase does not by itself authorize release to the rest of Chile, so the destination, storage, sale, and onward movement must be confirmed in advance.
Special legal grounds
Limited exceptions exist for qualifying returning residents, people with disabilities, and certain competition, historic, collection, or special-purpose vehicles. The Chilean authority or customs specialist must approve the exact basis and unit before shipment.
Customs file and registration
The appointed agent confirms the bill of lading, invoice or ownership record, insurance information, permits, and any certificate of origin. After release, the importer completes the required technical review, Civil Registry entry, insurance, and circulation formalities.
Steering position
Chile drives on the right and road vehicles generally use left-hand drive. Under the Iquique Free Zone procedure, an eligible right-hand-drive unit may be sent to an authorized workshop for conversion; this does not remove free-zone transfer restrictions.
